There are numerous software programs you can use to write your book, format your book, create your characters, and more. And that doesn't even include graphic design programs for your cover and any book art you may include.
We will list links to any programs we hear about and that at least one of us has tried. Programs which come with computers by default will not be included, but if we know of free versions, or plugins for default software, those will be in this list. Mobipocket ebook creator - Ruth recommends this. It's free. You turn your manuscript into an HTML file, and then the creator converts it into several ebook formats.
Open Office - Amanda has used this. It is similar to Word, but free.
